Now a days is all about trying to figure out your purpose and living that purpose. It’s enough to make us feel inadequate and lost in a sea of possibilities.

When we’re trapped in the mode of searching we miss seeing one very important thing and that is life, now as it is.

I’m a firm believer in the idea of being here for a reason. I believe my life is meant for something. I believe we are all here for a purpose. But here’s the thing I don’t think that it’s all about a single purpose.

When I was younger I was envious of all those around me who knew what they wanted to be when they grew up. My sister wanted to be a fashion designer. My friend wanted to be a teacher, my other friend an interior designer. I don’t think any of them ended up being any of these things. But I couldn’t have known it at the time. All I knew was that I wanted to know what I wanted to be and do. This feeling plagued me until just recently. There has always been the desire to know.

But what if the not knowing and the journey is my purpose and will continue to be my purpose?

What if purpose is pure consciousness? What if it’s about living conscious of what we do and why we do? Life may not be about some grand purpose, of saving the world, or healing illness. These are all great things but what if these come from living the ride of life.

I believe our purpose is to take each day and live it by choice. In these choices we stay aware and we find a path that fulfills us through conscious choice. These choices may lead us to healing cancer, being a teacher, a kind and loving parent, or even a musician.

When we’re on the search for deep purpose we miss out on seeing that all life is purposeful and whatever direction or path we find ourselves on we have a power of greatness just for being.

Most people who have accomplished what society sees as great and purposeful didn’t set out on the path to fulfill some great purpose. They instead let life lead them and they followed the lead by making the choice whether to go left or right, up or down.

They, we, never really know what’s at the end of each choice. What we can hope for is that by making conscious and thoughtful choices our path will lead us to our ultimate purpose which is love.

Next time you’re stuck in purpose mode, let up on yourself. Life doesn’t have to be about the search, it can simply be about living.
